PiloT°

Quick colostrum intake of piglets evaluation by their rectal temperature

PiloT° is a diagnostic tool which evaluates the colostrum intake (CI) of piglets. The pig producer organisation Eureden carried out a study including more than 4000 piglets and published at JRP (Leneveu et al. 2022) and ESPHM (Solignac et al. 2022). Good CI is vital for piglet survival and good performances (Leneveu et al. 2019. JRP). CI evaluation can be done based on piglets weight gain from birth to 24h (WG24[PL1]), but it’s still demanding in production farms. Our study has shown that CI is significantly linked to rectal temperature of piglets at 24h (T24). Indeed, piglets with T24 ≥38.5°C, defined as homeothermic piglets (HP), have a better WG24 and a T24 of 38.5°C appears to be a clear threshold to segregate WG24. PiloT° is an easy and fast tool to implement in the field with only 100 measures of T24. We suggested 2 thresholds, as minimal and feasible targets: 70% of HP and 50% litters with at least ¾ of HP. If the results are not compliant, Eureden technicians evaluate risk factors with farmers and provide advice in order to improve CI.
