Dairy breeds at SPACE

Focus on the seven dairy breeds presented at SPACE. You will find information on each breed and the schedule of the competitions.

The Normande breed, in the spotlight at SPACE 2021

The Normande breed will be highlighted at SPACE 2021 with its National competition. The animals presented will come from the Great West of France. This breed is the 3rd largest dairy cattle breed in France, mainly located in the Great West.

The Normande breed is one of the so-called mixed dairy breeds : selected on both criteria on milk quality and carcass quality. It allows breeders to produce quality milk, rich in proteins (the highest protein rate of all dairy breeds in France), as well as meat recognised for its flavour and marbling. Its beef qualities and morphology allow its meat to be well valued. The particularly rich milk of the Normandy cow is a major contributor to the reputation of the Normandy dairy and cheese PDOs (Camembert de Normandie, Livarot, Pont-L'évêque, Neufchâtel, Isigny cream and butter). In addition to its dairy and economic performance, the Normande has retained functional aptitudes that guarantee the economic performance of the farm and the comfort of the breeder's work: fertility, longevity, calving ease and docility.

The Simmental race in a European Challenge

The Simmental race will be showcased at SPACE 2021 with a European Challenge. The animals presented will come from France, Germany and Austria. This breed present on the 5 continents easily combines milk production and meat production, and continues its development in the Great West of France.

The Simmental is one of the first world races in numbers, with 40 million heads. The milk/meat mix of the breed is mainly exploited in Europe, while on other continents it is mainly used as a meat breed. Traditionally established in the Eastern regions of France, the Simmental breed has developed over the last 20 years throughout France and more particularly in the Massif Central and Aveyron where it produces almost all of the AOC fromagère of Laguiole. It is in the West of France that the Simmental is developing recently thanks to its ability to adapt to different systems, whether grassland, extensive, more intensive… Its hardiness and longevity are also assets used in crosses on specialized milk breeds, as well as its mixing for the butcher valorization of animals.

Prim’Holstein, a reference competition

The Prim’Holstein competition at SPACE is now THE reference at the European level for all the passionate breeders. The declaration of the Grand Champion is a key moment of the Show.

The Holstein is the number one milk producer in France and worldwide. Holstein accounts for 30% of French national cattle stock and 60% of French national dairy stock, and produces 80% of all milk collected in France. The unparalleled attraction for Holstein stems from their milk production capacities allied with good functional traits: udder adapted to mechanical milking, body capacity that optimizes feed intake, feet and legs that enables it to roam comfortably, pelvic conformation that makes for easy calving.

Brown Swiss

The Brown Swiss breed organise its Interrégional competition at SPACE this year.

As an international breed, Brown Swiss is active on 5 continents with a little over 530,000 cows under milk control throughout the world. In France, the breed is well represented with 16,162 cows under milk control. The selection base is international with World and European federations being very active for the breed promotion. In France, BGS is the unique structure for the promotion and the selection of the Brown Swiss breed. With an average production of 7692 kg at 4.2%F and 3.6%P, Brown Swiss offers a perfect milk balance between quantity and quality. In 2nd position among dairy breed for fat and protein content produced by lactation, its milk quality allows a gain around € 50 / 1000L on the milk price. The high proportion of Kappa Casein BB and Beta Casein A2A2 in Brown Swiss milk is also a benefit for processing and human health. The recognized longevity of the breed is an asset with an age at exit of +1.1 year on average compared to other dairy breeds. Its adaptability and in particular heat tolerance, strong feet and legs and its easy calving are also part of its hallmark.

Montbéliarde Breed

The Montbéliarde breed organise its Interrégional competition at SPACE this year.

It originates from the cross of three breeds: the Fémeline and the Taurache or Comtoise, two « multi-purpose breeds » used in Franche-Comté during the XVIIIth century and the Berne breed from Switzerland. The Montbéliarde breed developed in its cradle, in Franche-Comté, then spread very widely in all the French massifs. Today it represents the 2nd French dairy breed in terms of numbers, with 18,4%.
The main asset of the Montbéliarde lies in the balance of its productions. It has the best fat / protein ratio of the main French dairy breeds, and thus produces high quality cheese milk. This asset has enabled Montbéliarde to establish itself in many specifications for AOP cheeses. Thanks to its dairy qualities and its breeding facilities (fertility, longevity, resistance to large thermal amplitudes), the breed is exported to many countries. Crossed with local breeds, Montbéliarde reinforces their dairy and butcher's potential. On specialized dairy breeds, it brings its functional qualities of resistance and fertility. The Montbeliarde, with its charming look, is famous for its red spots in a white coat. Its head and legs also remain white most of the time, making it easy to recognize. It belongs to Pie-Rouge breeds family, along with the Simmental and the Fleckvieh cattle. This big, robust and elegant cow is about 1.45 meters at the shoulder and weighs from 600 to 750kg.

After its European Challenge in 2019, the breed returns with its Interregional competition.

The Pie Rouge des Plaines is concentrated mainly in Brittany, where about 80% of the total herd is found; it is also distributed in Normandy, and – to a lesser extent – in the Massif Central. The total population is estimated at about 60 000, with approximately 3 500 cows registered in the herd-book. Frozen semen from some 150 bulls is available for artificial insemination. Pie Rouge des Plaines has good dairy aptitude. Milk yield is of the order of 8000 kg in a lactation of 329 days. The milk has 4.3% fat and 3.3% protein. Meat production also contributes to profitability.
